As a volunteer, you will be trained in firefighting techniques and emergency response procedures and will have the opportunity to work alongside other dedicated members of your community.
Being a volunteer with the brigade can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. You will have the chance to make a difference in people’s lives and be part of a team that works together to keep the community safe. Additionally, you will learn new skills, meet new people and have the opportunity to be part of a close-knit group of individuals who share the same passion for community service.

There are some things you’ll need to consider to make sure the RFS is right for you.
- If you apply to join the NSW RFS now, you will not be fighting fires this current season.
- Joining the NSW RFS is a commitment that will require time for training, particularly in the beginning. You cannot volunteer for a few weeks, it requires a longer-term commitment.
- All our members must undergo training which will take place over a period of weeks and months.
- To be a volunteer you must live or work close enough to the brigade in order to respond to incidents in a timely manner and participate in brigade activities.
Our committed volunteers are ready to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round, attending bush and grass fires to house and structure fires and assisting at road accidents and other events like floods, storms, and searches.
We offer a variety of fulfilling roles ranging from admin to welfare support, and catering to communications. No experience is necessary and training is provided for each role that can lead to nationally-recognised qualifications.
All members of the NSW RFS are protected from legal liability when fighting bush fires or performing other authorised activities. Any injuries sustained while taking part in authorised brigade activities will be covered under Workers Compensation.
